While most Aliso Viejo Chamber of Commerce networking breakfasts start out with an inspirational quote to motivate and inspire leadership within the business community, September’s message was much different but just as important. Mayor Pro Tem Ross Chun took the moment to reflect on his family’s personal battles with mental health, and shared the importance of awareness and community support.
Mayor Chun used his story to speak about an upcoming mental health forum that will be held at The Aliso Viejo Ranch on September 30th. The night will include a community screening of the documentary “ANGST,” as well as a panel of local mental health professionals. The Adolescent Mental Health Panel will discuss anxiety and other mental health issues affecting students as they emerge from the isolation of the pandemic and return to in-person learning and social situations.
Aliso Viejo Chamber of Commerce members Laura’s House and Aliso Ridge Behavioral Health will take part in the panel. The evening is an effort to help educate community members about the importance of mental health support, and the resources available in the Aliso Viejo area.
Laura’s House has provided shelter and supportive services to thousands of abused women, men and children, and has provided counseling and legal advocacy to over 55,000 people in Orange County. The organization originally started in 1994, and has opened several locations over the last three decades. This includes two residential facilities to house victims of domestic abuse, a domestic violence advocacy center, two resale stores and their flagship Domestic Violence Resource Center located in Aliso Viejo.
Aliso Ridge Behavioral Health is a 119-bed inpatient and outpatient mental health facility located at 200 Freedom Ln in Aliso Viejo. The facility will offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment options for children (age 6 and up), adolescents, and adults (including seniors). The brand new 80,000 square-foot psychiatric center was designed with open and serene spaces to create a safe and therapeutic environment. The hospital will be open 24/7 and will offer free assessments for patients. It’s slated to officially open in October.
The Adolescent Mental Health Panel will be held on Thursday, September 30th from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at The Aliso Viejo Ranch. The event is free to attend. You can RSVP at FeedingAlisoViejo@gmail.com.
