As summer approaches and the weather gets warmer, to keep your car cool you might be tempted to keep your car windows cracked while you’re at work or running errands. But you could be inviting a thief to your property. In recent months, there have been numerous vehicle break-ins in Southern Orange County. To prevent further crime, we want to remind residents of Aliso Viejo to do their part and help keep our beautiful city safe.
It’s easy to forget to lock our car. But when we leave our car unlocked, we are putting ourselves at risk for burglary. Thieves tend to target areas like shopping malls, gyms, condo complexes and street parking where a high volume of cars are parked. They then quickly move car to car looking for unlocked doors. Detectives refer to this as “car fishing.” Like regular fishermen, thieves commonly do their fishing when there is an abundance of cars, usually late at night or early morning, although some break-ins occur in broad daylight.
The best way to reduce the likelihood of these incidents is by incorporating crime prevention practices into our daily life. Following these simple safety tips can ensure your belongings stay in the right hands.
- Roll up your windows and lock your doors
- Do not leave valuables or garage door openers in plain sight
- Park in well-lit areas
- Keep your car clean and tidy
- If possible, park in your garage.
- Report suspicious activity
By following these safety tips, you take away the thieves’ opportunity and make it much more difficult for them to commit crimes. Be a part of the solution.
