May Networking Breakfast: Practicing Brain Health

Learning was the theme of this month’s networking breakfast. Specifically, we learned how to stay active and keep your brain healthy as we age.

A big thank you to Paula Lemkuil, in Community Relations at the Belmont Village Senior Living in Aliso Viejo, for educating our members about the six domains of Brain Fitness. These six domains and exercises are a big part of the Memory Care program offered to the Belmont Village Senior Living residents to keep their minds sharp and their brains healthy!

Tips to Keep Your Brain Active

As mentioned, Paula began with educating us about the brain and how to continue to build cognitive reserve as we age. The slide in the image to the right provides some of those tips:

  1. Have a strong social network
  2. Do aerobic and strength exercises
  3. Do a mental workout (one featured below!)
  4. Practice life-long learning
  5. Live a healthy lifestyle to reduce your stress
  6. Have a heart-healthy diet
  7. Find a sense of purpose and feeling useful

Mental Workout Example – Challenge Your Brain!

Below is one of the numerous games Paula used in her presentation to involve the Aliso Viejo Chamber members. Brain games like Sudoku are also great to practice, but a variety of games are best, so you can stretch your brain in ways it is not used to! All these games are aimed at challenging memory recall, analytical thinking, and attention.

For the game below, try to guess what all three of these words have in common:
