For many Aliso Viejo families, mid-to-late August is back-to-school season. To celebrate the start of the academic calendar, the Aliso Viejo Chamber of Commerce is highlighting its educational member organizations this week. Read on to learn about the local organizations helping shape our future, one child at a time.
Capistrano Unified School District
The Capistrano Unified School District is the local governmental unit serving Aliso Viejo’s public and charter schools. This three-year Chamber member organization operates 64 schools and educational programs, including 33 elementary schools, three K-8 schools, ten middle schools, six comprehensive high schools, five charter schools and eight alternative schools/programs, such as an Adult Education Program, an Adult Transition Program, and a Fresh Start.
In total, the CUSD reaches 53,878 students across the cities of San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo, and Rancho Santa Margarita, with a mission “to prepare our students to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.” If you’re an Aliso Viejo resident with children in the CUSD, take note that school is officially back in session on Tuesday, August 20, 2019. The Discovery Preparatory School
The Discovery Prep School is a co-ed private day school located on Liberty. The school is fully accredited through Cognia (formally AdvancED) and serves children in grades six through 12, with a student-teacher ratio of 4:1. At The Discovery Prep School, each day starts at 8:30 a.m. and finishes at 3:00 p.m., and the curriculum is delivered “in a blended, Socratic environment that emphasizes mastery.” The school describes itself as “a rigorous, yet compassionate college preparatory school,” and outside of its core curriculum, the school employs a Quest-based learning method – a program requiring every student to engage in five individual and collective service-oriented, entrepreneurial or artistic “Quests” each year. Soka University
Soka University is a private, non-profit, four-year liberal arts college and graduate school, and is the only four-year university located in Aliso Viejo. The university is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission and has a total enrollment of just over 400 students. A fun fact about the school is that it was the first U.S. liberal arts college to make study abroad mandatory when it opened in 2001. Due to this unique requirement, school alumni often recount their Soka University study abroad experience as a highlight of their educational career. This year, the fall semester starts September 5, 2019, for all graduate and undergraduate students. To learn more about Soka University, click here.
