From sobriety checkpoints to mosquito safety, here is what’s happening in the community this month…
Aliso Viejo DUI Checkpoint This Weekend
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s DUI Enforcement Team will take to the streets of Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, and Laguna Woods this weekend between the hours of 7pm and 3am looking for intoxicated drivers, keeping the roads of our beloved community safe and sound. Deputy Richard Oates warns to think before you drink, as the only way to avoid the risk of a DUI is to drive sober.
There are so many ways to get home safely after a night out, it isn’t worth putting yourself and those around you at risk by getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. We recommend always designating a sober driver before heading out. If you don’t have a sober driver designated, take a taxi or Uber ride home. The price of an Uber ride is nothing compared to the cost of a DUI, or worse, someone’s life.
Traffic Delays Expected on I-5 South This Weekend
In more traffic news, expect bad traffic delays heading Southbound on the I-5 this weekend. The freeway will be reduced to one lane at Avenida Pico and 4 nearby ramps will be completely closed beginning Friday night, August 19th and reopening Saturday afternoon. If you are heading south this weekend, make sure to plan accordingly as this is expected to cause significant delays. For detour information, click here.
Orange County Mosquito Threat Continues To Grow
There have been recent detections of Asian tiger mosquitoes in Mission Viejo and Newport Beach, as well as yellow fever mosquitoes in Santa Ana. Both species of mosquitoes are carriers of West Nile virus and Asian tiger mosquitoes can carry the Zika virus. We want to remind everyone of the importance of bite prevention during this time. Keep in mind these tips for keeping yourself bite-free:
- Wear a repellent whenever spending time outdoors.
- Be sure there is no standing water around or near your home.
• Make sure all window and door screens of your home are in good condition.
• Contact the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District to report dead birds or neglected pools.
