April Networking Breakfast: Bob Bunyan & Ziggurat Development Plans

ziggurat-developmentThis April, Bob Bunyan, Principal at Robert Bunyan & Associates, was the highlight of our monthly networking breakfast with his insightful presentation on the Chet Holifield Federal Building. Stephen Wagner, VP of Finance and Operations at KWSM: a digital marketing agency and a President’s Circle member, remarked how Bunyan’s presentation was one for the books: “I’d say my biggest takeaway was learning about the history of the Ziggurat, and the potential plans for development or preservation.”

Also known as the “Ziggurat,” this unique building has recently left federal hands to be preserved or developed into a public space. Bob presented on the building’s history, why it was there to begin with, and who’s used it over the years.

The building was designed by renowned architect William Pereira, and draws attention for its stepped pyramid structure not often seen in American architecture. It was originally built in 1968 to provide offices and an electronics manufacturing plant for North American Aviation, a defense and aerospace industries manufacturer.

Now, developers are determining whether the building has any historical significance before deciding on a strategy to preserve or repurpose the space. If it does hold historical significance, developers will have to decide how they’ll preserve it and whether all or part of the original structure will be kept. There are currently five Ziggurat development propositions in motion including a retail location, office space, residential area, and public park.

Along with Bunyan’s insights on possible Ziggurat development in the near future, Stephen remarked how his favorite part of these events is always seeing old friends and making new acquaintances. “I think the best part was seeing people I haven’t seen in awhile, and connecting with other members in the Chamber and local business community.”

The next AVCC networking breakfast will be taking place next month on Tuesday, May 10th with “Earlybird Networking” starting at 7:30 a.m. Bring a drawing gift, promote your business, and grab some breakfast – all for only $20. If you prepay and register online, the fee drops to $14.95. Just be sure to register by 4:00 p.m. the day before the event to reserve your spot!
