Aliso Viejo is celebrating its 20th anniversary as an incorporated city this month. The area became Orange County’s 34th city on July 1st, 2001, and had a population of just over 40,000 people at the time. It was the first planned community in California to map out and design a balance between its projected resident workforce and the number of jobs within its borders.
Aliso Viejo Mayor Tiffany Ackley released a message about the City’s milestone:
“This month is one of multiple celebrations for us here in the City, as we look back and reflect on the last 20 years of Aliso Viejo. Our 20th anniversary marks one not only of achievement, but of strength and courageousness seen through the efforts of you, our residents, through the past year of the pandemic. I have been honored to watch this city grow; from the many businesses that have planted their roots here to the development of our iconic and historic landmarks such as Aliso Viejo Ranch. We truly have blossomed into a thriving community that we can all be so proud to live, work, and play in every single day.”
In celebration of 20 years, here’s a look at some fun facts about Aliso Viejo:
- Aliso Viejo’s first Chamber of Commerce was founded on August 22, 2012 with the election and installation of the Board of Directors.
- Aliso Viejo was originally part of the 22,000-acre Moulton Ranch. In the 1890s, the Moulton family took ownership of the land the Mexican government originally granted to Juan Avila in 1842.
- Aliso Viejo became the 34th city of Orange County on July 1, 2001, after a petition was launched to put the question of cityhood to a community vote. More than 90% decided to make Aliso Viejo a city!
- The city’s name means “old sycamore” in Spanish.
- According to the United States Census Bureau, the total population is 50,887.
- The city’s slogan is “Aliso Viejo – Experience it all.” It was created by a resident of Aliso Viejo!
